Mourners sung John Lennon's Imagine to honour Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Washington DC while politicians, celebrities and everyday people paid tribute to the woman known as Notorious RBG.

US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden described Justice Ginsburg as "a relentless voice" in the pursuit of justice after the 87-year-old died due to complications from metastatic pancreatic cancer.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Justice Ginsburg's death was "an incalculable loss for our democracy and for all who sacrifice and strive to build a better future for our children.".

Mr Carter said in a statement that he was proud to have appointed Justice Ginsburg to the US Court of Appeals in 1980 — a step taken long before her 1993 selection for the nation's highest court by another Democratic president, Bill Clinton.

US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts mourned Ginsburg's passing in the court's statement.

We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague," Justice Roberts said

Australia's ambassador to the US Arthur Sinodinos paid tribute to Ms Ginsburg on Twitter: "Vale Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, champion of gender equality
