The number of babies born in America last year was the lowest in more than four decades, according to federal figures released Wednesday that show a continuing U.S.

women had about 3.61 million babies in 2020, down 4% from the prior year, provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics shows.

The total fertility rate—a snapshot of the average number of babies a woman would have over her lifetime—fell to 1.64.

births fell in all but one year as the economy grew from 2009 until early 2020.
