Google Hangouts finally gets a shutdown date: November 2022 - Ars Technica
Jun 27, 2022 54 secs

It sounds like Google is finally getting ready to move on from Google Hangouts, the company's most successful messaging app to date.

Today is also the day when existing Google Hangouts users will start getting nagged to switch to Google's hot, new messaging app, Google Chat.

Starting today, most Google Hangouts clients will start pushing users to Google Chat. While most follow-ups to Google Hangouts have been severely lacking in comparable features, Google Chat is a decent upgrade to Google Hangouts, so there are Google Chat options for all the Hangouts clients you may have been using.

Google says that any of your Hangouts conversations—which can date back to 2005 under Google Talk—should be moved over to Google Chat by now.

Google's blog post says "We encourage users who wish to keep a copy of their Hangouts data to use Google Takeout to download their data before Hangouts is no longer available in November 2022," but apparently that date is just for Google Takeout, a data export service, and there's a good chance you'll be locked out of Google Hangouts before then.
