Looting and violence has erupted in the United States in the wake of the custody death of African-American man George Floyd.

Looting, violence and fires have occurred in a number of cities in the days after the death of Mr Floyd in Minneapolis.

In their report, Reuters also cited court and police records from some of the cities where violence erupted — Baltimore, Minneapolis and Washington — that show most of the people the police had charged with rioting, property damage and violent offences over the weekend lived either in those cities or in nearby suburbs.

Some people have begun to speak out in recent days to ask for an end to the looting and violence.

Among them is Terrence Floyd, who told a gathering of those paying their respects to his brother that he wanted people to get educated and vote rather than resort to violence and destruction.

Others have also defended the looting online with the quote "merchandise can be replaced, black lives cannot".

Dr Corbould points out that from the perspective of those targeted and traumatised by police, property damage and looting are justified.

Police in America are looting black bodies," Noah said.

On the anniversary in the years since, Lieutenant General Russel Honoré, who coordinated around 300 national guardsmen sent in to keep order in the aftermath of the disaster, said the looting at the time was "way over-reported"

In an interview with the Guardian, he said "people confused looting with people going into survival mode"
