For Gisele Mayordo, known to professional wrestling fans as Gisele Shaw of Impact Wrestling, it was not a question of what’s going on in the rest of the world.

The 33-year-old Filipino wrestler picked her time to come out publicly: Friday, June 24, 2022, at Toronto Pride in Canada.

“People are getting away from, that trans people are discriminated against, that trans people are the targets of violence.

Transitioning into life as Gisele 12 years ago — “I knew for a fact that I was trans when I was six years old,” Mayordo states — she has long been out among family and friends?

Why come out now, in this moment when public animus against trans people has been ratcheted up from general ignorance to outright animus.

Finding out that Mayordo is trans is the least thing on reigning Impact “Knockouts” (or women’s) champ Jordynne Grace?

It might be easy to mistake who Gisele is with her persona in the ring, which might be something of an extra layer of difficulty when trans people face daily arguments over who they are.

Mayordo has a sense of humor about it: “I’m a down-to-earth person, but Gisele Shaw is this diva extraordinare — ‘Get me the checks and the diamonds!’ My friends know it’s a character.
