SEGA Breaks Hearts by Announcing New RPG Is a Mobile Game - Push Square
Sep 17, 2021 5 mins, 20 secs

Update: Bloody SEGA.

Earlier this week, the Tokyo Game Show 2021 website teased a "new RPG" from the Japanese publisher, with Persona developer Atlus also being present during the livestream.

Immediately, minds turned to the prospect of a new Persona or Yakuza title.

Maybe even a new Sakura Wars game.

But no, this new RPG is for mobile.

SEGA has pushed a countdown website for the project (thanks, Gematsu), confirming that it'll be revealed during its TGS showcase.

Original Story: According to a new listing on the official Tokyo Game Show 2021 website (as spotted by VGC), SEGA is expected to announce a new role-playing game during the show.

This same SEGA livestream will also feature Atlus — the company behind the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games.

We don't know whether the aforementioned RPG will be from Atlus, but the we do know that the developer is planning a Persona-related announcement this month.

A new Sakura Wars title is a possibility as well.

What are you hoping to see from SEGA at TGS.

Sakura Wars Remastered Collection or a new Persona I am personally hoping for.

I'd like an announcement that Persona 4 Golden is coming to PS4/5!

Ngl, I'd take a new Sakura Wars in the new (shin) style.

A new standalone Phantasy Star game would be nice and I won't lie but I'm hoping for Persona 6.

I want sakura wars but the rpg sakura wars, not that weird 3D action game like the last one.

Heck, maybe remake the old sega saturn sakura wars with new 2D graphics (like sonic mania or street of rage 4), since I never played those when I still have saturn console back then.

My friends, most of whom are restricted to playstation, refuse to buy Sega games until the TGS ends as they suspect an acquisition announcement.

Honestly I wish platforms would somehow pay for the right to have a game series on their platform (that they did not have before) rather than outright exclusivity.

Edit: I think Persona 6 will get a weird teaser first (like persona 5) rather than an announcement.

Also a new Sakura Wars wouldn't be bad!

Hopefully persona 6 announcement or a port of persona 4 golden and persona 3 fes to modern consoles.

If it is directly from Sega Valkyria Chronicles 5 would make me very happy.

Imagine the reaction if Persona 6 was announced!

Ill joing in with hoping for a new Valkyria Chronicles or new Sakura Wars (and please SW on Switch this time).

We already know that there will be a Persona related announcement this month as Atlus have already confirmed it.

The smart money is on a Persona 4 Golden PS4/5 port?

With Judgement 2 landing now and Yakuza LaD last Fall, I doubt there's anything Yakuza related for at least 2 years, they just launched two games in the franchise.

Any Sega RPG is the highlight of the month for me though.

Honestly, I want a new Valkyria or Sakura game, I feel like it's gonna be a few years before p6 is announced.

I’d love a nee Sakura Wars.

The previous one is a great game and set new standards for graphics in an anime game.

I do wish it were Yakuza 8 but it seems unlikely indeed. Most likely it'll be a Persona project to celebrate the anniversary. Other SMT spin-offs or Etrian Odyssey would be really exciting for me, though..

@NEStalgia There could easily be a Yakuza announcement.

For all we know it could be a new RPG game for mobile devices....

i am very surprised by the number of people who forgot about project re-fantasy — the next game from studio zero, aka the former persona team.

we have not been given an update for over 3 years so maybe i shouldn't be surprised that nobody brings this game up anymore lol...

but this game will be an evolutionary step up from persona 5 and should be amazing.

any game announced outside of this will be disappointing to me.

Well even if the rumours of Microsoft buying sega are true its a bit late to keep persona 6 off playstation consoles as its alrwady in development and hopefully gets announced at TGS

….and it’s a phone game 😂

Interestingly a website has written a whole article saying SEGA, Square, Konami, EA, WB games and - here is the most likely....- Playstation are all possibilities eye roll

On SEGA, i see no value selling out to Microsoft given most of their revenue seems to come from Sony and Nintendo

Honestly Sega stopped being relevant after the Dreamcast failed

@RubyCarbuncle Guess Persona and Yakuza aren't relevant then

Man it's disappointing that the game is a mobile games.

@Rob_230 tbh I wouldn't mind Microsoft having sega aslong as atlus were left out of the deal and went their separate ways, otherwise that would mean no more persona for playstation and no more shin megami for nintendo and let's be honest these two atlus franchises would be dead if they were only on xbox consoles in the future as the majority of Japanese gamers still wouldn't buy an xbox

Hopefully atlus delivers the goods with their TGS and the persona anniversary projects

Tbh wasn't expecting Persona 6 to be announced yet

On the topic of of Sega acquisition in comments, I would hate it more for their screwing over their traditionally loyal fan base on playstation than for the effect on Sony

So, konami hints to the castlevania collection coming to consoles, all the while wipeout and sega announced new games for the mobile crowd

@Rob_230 Dude I grew up with Sega it's just my opinion and that is subjective like my view is subjective

I get you, and i understand that post-dreamcast SEGA has never been the same (going to Japan and seeing SEGA literally disappearing from the landscape has been a sad sight indeed!)

For the record, my comment on criminally underrated wasn't directed at you, but just the general narrative around SEGA

Thinking about the excellent games they have put out over the past few years - from stuff like Persona 5, Yakuza, Judgment, 13 Sentinels, Sonic Team Racing, Alien Isolation, Sonic Mania - to their more niche stuff like Hatsune Miku, Sakura Wars etc, they just seem to be one of the more creative publishers/developers out there at the moment

Here's hoping the Persona announcement is great

At least it's not another Sonic game
