The state’s top public health official on Friday made an emotional appeal to Illinois residents to “fight the fatigue” as the state ended the week with half its counties at a “warning level” for a resurgence of COVID-19 and a broad swath of the state living under stricter rules meant to slow its spread.

“If you’re talking about COVID fatigue from having to keep wearing a mask, think about the COVID fatigue for health care workers, respiratory therapists, who are going to have to go through this whole episode again, of trying to fight for peoples' lives, because we couldn’t figure out how to control this virus, by doing some of the simple measures that have been prescribed,” Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr.

As of Friday, the state Department of Public Health issued warnings for 51 counties across the state that data indicates are seeing a resurgence of COVID-19, and a large section of the state, including suburban areas, the northwest corner of the state and southern Illinois, is living under stricter state rules meant to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The state on Friday banned indoor bar and restaurant service and lowered caps on gatherings to 25 people in Kane, DuPage, Will and Kankakee counties.

The state reported data on Friday showing a 7.8% positivity rate for the region made up by Lake and McHenry counties.

The county warning list, which the state Department of Public Health issues weekly, includes Kane, McHenry and Will counties.

The Illinois Department of Public Health uses a range of metrics to assess whether counties are placed at the warning level, including new cases per 100,000 people, weekly hospital admissions and emergency room visits and the number of deaths.
