Washington: US President Donald Trump has declared he will end the rioting and violence that has broken out at protests across America in recent days, vowing to deploy the military even if it goes against the wishes of local officials.

Declaring himself a "law and order" president, Trump said: "I am mobilising all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting.

On a conference call with governors earlier in the day, Trump said local leaders would like "fools" unless they took back control of their streets.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat who has clashed with Trump during the coronavirus pandemic, said the President's threat to deploy the military by force was "really, truly shameful".
