Unvaccinated people in Connecticut have been about 17 times more likely to test positive for COVID-19 during the month of July than vaccinated people, according to state data, even as breakthrough cases have become slightly more common due to the spread of the Delta variant.

Overall, Connecticut has recorded 1,133 COVID-19 breakthrough cases since vaccination began, along with 171 hospitalizations and 27 deaths, out of more than two million vaccinated residents.

Connecticut’s breakthrough cases — defined as infections that occur at least 14 days after someone’s final vaccine dose — have been spread relatively evenly across age groups, while breakthrough hospitalizations and deaths have mostly occurred among older residents, state numbers show.

According to state data, Connecticut’s rate of breakthrough cases has increased in July as the Delta variant has begun to spread widely, from about five per 100,000 residents to about about 14 per 100,000 residents.
