But when I was asked to lead Tulsa Remote, an experimental program that launched in 2018, I learned quickly that there were treasures out there that no amount of cash could buy.

Sure, the check is helpful, but you need much more than a one-time cash infusion to start a life in a new city?

What do most people want out of life.

In Tulsa, we've invested in all of the above because we know you can't put a return on investment on quality of life.

On top of that, the city has invested in a revitalized Arts District that boasts hip coffee shops, vegan taco joints, steakhouse speakeasies, whiskey bars, art galleries, coworking spaces, and a software-development school — all to make the city a desirable place for young people and families wanting to grow.

When you're exploring cities, ask yourself: Who is this city trying to attract.

If you're a hiker, for example, you may want to choose a place where outdoor life is celebrated and accessible rather than a city that's hundreds of miles from the nearest national park or forest trail?

In relocation, like in romance, the right partners make all the difference, so hold on for that special city — don't move to a place just because it's more affordable, and don't settle for a place that doesn't share your passions.

I'll be honest here: When we launched Tulsa Remote, we didn't have the infrastructure in place to support the massive, rapid growth we were soon experiencing.

Be clear-eyed about your priorities, know what you're ready to sacrifice and what you don't want to give up, and move to a place you're prepared for — and that's prepared for you.
