Nurses ensure he's as comfortable as possible but, despite receiving the best of care at the elite Alexis Multispecialty Hospital in Nagpur, they know he will not survive.

The city of Nagpur, which escaped the worst of the pandemic last year, was the first city to be overwhelmed by the virus in the most recent wave.

Authorities in India continue to blame poor behaviour for triggering the second surge, but doctors in Nagpur believe the recently discovered 'double mutant' variant is also partly to blame.

The variant, officially labelled B1617, has mutations from two other identified variants that appear to make it more infectious and able to evade antibodies.

Infectious disease expert from Alexis Multispecialty Hospital, Dr Nitin Shinde, says the 'double mutation' variant spreads faster and younger patients are suffering more severe symptoms.
