10-year-old dies from plague in Colorado - New York Daily News

The unidentified child lived in largely rural La Plata County near the state’s southwest corner, the Colorado health department said Thursday.

Plague-causing bacteria Yersinia pestis has been detected in six counties in the region and is often found in animals such as fleas, squirrels and chipmunks, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
