Fred Rogers died of stomach cancer in 2003.

Joanne met Fred at Rollins College in the fall of 1948, helping to welcome him to the Florida school after he transferred from Dartmouth College.

McFeely, the delivery man in the show, said that Fred and Joanne shared a hearty sense of humor.

“She was a lovely woman,” Newell, 82, told the Daily News.
