NSW Labor has endorsed a miner and union official as its candidate for the Upper Hunter byelection as polling reveals the majority of voters in the electorate do not oppose a moratorium on new coal mines.

The polling showed that more than 57 per cent of voters supported or strongly supported Mr Turnbull’s comments and more than 54 per cent of Nationals’ voters also backed his position.

Almost 70 per cent of Labor voters supported a moratorium, as did more than 56 per cent of Shooters, Fishers and Farmers voters.

About 58 per cent of One Nation voters disagreed.

The polling showed the Nationals with a primary vote of 35.4 per cent, Labor on 22 per cent, the Greens on 9.3 per cent, One Nation 13 per cent and Shooters, Fishers and Farmers on 7.6 per cent.
