Throwback Thursday: Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan is the most expensive mythological show of its time - India Today

Exactly 33 years ago, Ramanand Sagar's mythological show Ramayan aired for the first time on January 25, 1987.

He said this will be the future," said Prem Sagar, Ramanand Sagar's son and a producer on the show.

After they came back to India, Ramanand Sagar gave a round-the-world air ticket to Prem, with pamphlets about Ramayan and Krishna and letters addressed to his rich businessman friends who stayed overseas, to collect funds for his dream project.

He came back empty-handed but his father was determined to make three mythological shows on Ramayan, Krishna and Durga.

"People were not ready to back Ramayan because they thought mukut-mooch (crown and moustache) won’t work," said Prem Sagar.

Vikram Aur Betaal was made in Rs 1 lakh an episode, whereas Ramayan was made in approximately Rs 9 lakh per episode.

Arvind Mafatlal was a big name and he backed Ramayan totally," shared Prem Sagar.

Prem Sagar shared, The Shah Bano case was responsible for Ramayan airing on Doordarshan.

Ramanand Sagar also tweaked Valmiki’s Ramayan to suit the Indian audience of the 80s.

Even in the Sita vanwas episode, Sita leaves on her own." Prem believes that these were very dramatic changes, which people accepted because they were nicely weaved into the story
